TYPOGRAPHY & ENVIRONMENT

Exhibit Installation and Presentation

Presentation brief:
The written word is more than a documentation of our spoken language...it is what you see before you imagine. Whether through letterpress, digital font selection, or hand lettering, your story begins with both the “ink” you have put down and the area where no ink resides. During the presentation, we will visit typography in its place, how it is used, and why it is used as we examine the work of local artists that are keeping typography in our environment, how they are mixing modern technology into their work, and how they are learning on the fly.

Typography & Environment started as a 20 slide Pecha Kucha presentation that my wife and I presented in 2009 to the Hampton Roads chapter of the AIA. Years later, after joining Hanbury Evans Wright Vlattas + Company the message still resonated with a handful of the design principles that had seen the original presentation. In an effort to promote the graphic quality of our work, we were asked to reimagine the presentation as an hour long immersion into the history of type and printing. We paired the historical components with the work or local artists using type (from hand lettering to letter painting and from letterpress to screen printing) which culminated in an extensive installation showing of selected works from the our collection and local artists.
