SHOU SUGI BAN ARTWORK

Byrd's Restaurant

Shou sugi ban is a Japanese wood preservation technique where the surface of the lumber is charred. Though traditionally the technique is on cedar siding, I had done a series of tests on red cedar, oak, douglas fir, pine & poplar. When the owner of a local restaurant needed a piece of art for their grand opening, I had the sugi ban tests ready for display.

The poplar char presented evenly across the surface with a seemingly iridescent sheen and became the perfect backdrop for the work to follow. The charred surface was covered to protect it and the branch design was routed exposing the raw lumber. Leaves and the "bird" were painted onto the surface of the char.
