CONTRAST JAPAN
Travel Photography, Exhibit Installation and Presentation
Excerpt from Journal:
Senso-ji Temple | Asakusa, Tokyo | Mid 7th Century
Visitors to the Senso-ji temple begin their journey by purifying their spirit at the cast bronze incense burner. They pull smoke once over the head for wisdom and once to the face for beauty.

Horyu-ji Temple | Ikaruga, Nara | Early 7th Century
The grounds here are hallowed and heavy. Agyoh (guardian of light) and Ungyoh (guardian of darkness) watch over us as we enter. Buildings float inches off the ground; held aloft by the crowns of interred boulders at each corner. Bolt locks show their age; millions of hands must have opened these doors.
Exhibit Installation: Contrast Japan
Following our return from Japan (Osaka, Kyoto, & Tokyo), I developed an exhibit display that referenced the busy skylines, cluttered with utilities and forced the user into a restricted corridor indicative of the space premium that was observed in the congested downtown areas. The installation, titled Contrast Japan, was comparing the modern aesthetic within the historic context.
