AMPLE SAMPLE DESIGN COMPETITION

2010 Entry: Parabitat

The Ample Sample Design Competition was established as a response to the carbon footprint associated with carpet samples through the shipping and distribution process. The challenge was to create and/or propose an object that could be built from the thousands of samples circulating the global. A single graphic representation must be paired with instructions for fabrication. In 2010, Parabitat, our second entry into the competition, was selected as a finalist. The proposal was to shape one piece of carpet sample as a ellipse and sew it to a rectangular carpet sample. The resulting shape forms a parabolic bird house that is scalable based on carpet samples on hand and the species of bird you want to bring to your yard. (Start a family, click the image on the right to download directions and build your very own Parabitat.)

2009 Entry: reLOOP

Our 2009 Ample Sample Competition entry was a play on loop pile carpet that created a cushion from alternating strips of carpet samples looped into a heavy carpet base. The folded carpet samples that made the base would splay the top of the seat and threaded rod would tie the whole structure together. (Click the image on the left to download directions to build a chair and ottoman)
